O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high school student. Judges loved her voice and she was able to advance into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges, however she experienced significant defeats in the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or second-bottom two places and bottom two, respectively. The judges were stunned by the results and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa O'Neil, who had the best singing abilities. O'Neil wasn't in the third place again following numerous outstanding performance. Judge Werner predicted, after another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner in this year's Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest in show history after the 7th September, 2005 finals. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
